Rats are a pest many people fear

Because of their nature and the images they conjure, rats are among the more feared pests that most people are likely to come across. Getting a rat infestation on your property is not a pleasant experience but it is also one that can usually be dealt with quickly and efficiently. The home owner can often tackle the problem by setting traps for rats or even laying poison. However, it is also important to try to avoid attracting rats in the first place and this can be done by making sure that food waste is properly disposed of and that access holes to a property are blocked.

The rise of bedbugs

It may seem surprising given the modern mania for hygiene and cleanliness, but I recently learned that bedbugs are now more common than ever.

Experts blame the rise in travel for the growing number of bedbug infestations throughout the developed world. bedbugs thrive in the soft upholstery of trains, planes and other modes of transport, and they can easily move from suitcase to suitcase in crowded baggage holds.

Once bedbugs have gained a foothold in your home, they can be incredibly difficult to get rid of. Their tiny size means that they can hide almost anywhere, and the only way to be sure of ridding your home of them is to call in a professional pest control company.

A spa voucher is a perfect birthday gift

There’s nothing like a relaxing day at a spa, perhaps with a treatment in the morning and a light lunch with some further pampering in the afternoon. Presenting someone with the opportunity to spend a day at a spa is a great birthday gift. With a spa voucher, it enables them to decide when they wish to go so as they can plan it into their diary and possibly even arrange to take a friend. Such a gift is often very well received, and particularly because the recipient sooften emerges from a spa day feeling fully refreshed and pampered.

The Natural Cycle

Many of us do not think when we squash or kill unwanted insects and other animals in the house and garden. We squish spiders, drown slugs and get rid of mice like there is no tomorrow with little thought of whether they are actually of benefit to the garden or indeed to the environment.

I guess that they are all useful in their own way, as they are part of the natural cycle of life. They all have to be part of the food chain and are therefore integral to existence. However, I must admit that when it comes to creatures like mice and rats, I forget the food chain and my own priorities take over.

However, of the other insects that we kill without even thinking about it, some of them could just be good for your home and garden. Spiders are pretty grim creatures and yet you have to admit they do keep the flies down in the home.

Worms and ladybirds are also good for the garden and are actively beneficial to the soil. The only poor defenceless creature that I have not found a use for yet is the slug as this just tears through my plants like a locust, but even here we can keep in harmony with the environment by putting up copper defences to keep them away instead of killing them.

Save it Where you Can

There are many small ways that we can contribute towards saving the environment and while we all have to make a greater effort across the board, many of us can make energy savings with little effort – plus of course the less energy used the cheaper your household bills will be, especially in these times of soaring commodity and food prices.

There are so many appliances and other things in the house and garden which use electricity such as household appliances, heating, an electric High Security Fence and garden equipment. The key is to try to analyse which is using the most electricity or gas or oil and try and make small changes accordingly.

Analyse your fuel bills and see what is costing you more. If your oil bills are sky high, why not try switching your thermostat down by just one degree. You will hardly notice the difference in terms of warmth but you will see the change in your gas bill.

If electricity is the killer, consider installing a smart meter which lets you know which of your electrical appliances are the biggest culprits, so that you can use them less or consider changing them for a more energy efficient one.

Most electricity companies also offer a reduced tariff if you use appliances such as the washing machine or tumble dryer in off peak times.

Birds Eye Iglo launch grip seal bags to cook frozen fish

Birds Eye Iglo has announced the launch of a new range of frozen fish which is cooked in special grip seal bags developed by packaging company FFP Packaging Solutions.

The new line, branded as “Simply Bake to Perfection”, has been developed in an attempt to increase fish consumption and expand the market by making consumers more confident when it comes to handling and cooking fish.

Gary Tee, business development director for FFP Packaging Solutions, explained: “People are not confident about handling and cooking fish correctly. The ‘Bake Perfect Bag’ provides an important reassurance in the kitchen.”

The bag itself is manufactured from a strip of metallised polyethylene terephthalate (PET) laminate, which is laser-perforated in order to allow it to vent steam during cooking. The perforations are also specially designed to ensure that moisture is retained throughout the cooking process.

The new laminate material, which is supplied on a reel that is suitable for use in high-speed form-fill-seal machines, also features a heat-seal coating on its inner surface for quick sealing. Additionally, cooking instructions can be printed directly on to the pack.

While the new bags were designed for use with fish, FFP Packaging has also stated that they can be used for any frozen oven-cooked foods.

Tetra Pak in consultation on ceasing UK roll-fed carton production

Carton and packaging giant Tetra Pak has recently launched a consultation on the future of its Wrexham site, stating that it is “driven by a desire to ensure continued competitiveness and to meet customers’ changing needs”.

According to the consultation, the organisation is planning on retaining around 135 jobs in Wrexham. At present, the Wrexham workforce represents around half the number of staff Tetra Pak employs in the UK.

Rik Jacobs, the managing director for the company for Ireland and the UK, stated: “We intend to create over 20 new jobs to operate a finished goods warehouse to better service the UK and Irish markets and ensure we are in the right shape for future growth.”

With local customers moving away from cartons towards other packaging formats, Tetra Pak stated, the Wrexham site has been able to replace lost local business with export orders, which accounted for around 50% of production in the last year.

However, new facilities that have been set up in locations such as Russia and the Middle East mean that many of these export markets will effectively disappear in the coming year, and demand from UK and Irish consumers alone will not justify the continued running of the Wrexham site.

Mr Jacobs explained that it had been a difficult decision, and that if the proposals are implemented, there would inevitably be “significant restructuring and job losses”.
